Ah I hadn't updated this thread in a minute. I need to work on cutting carbs. I also need to work on getting a proper diet. I don't overeat. However I believe my calories and content are holding me back. I eat around 1200 to 1300 calories a day. I have been working out and burning about 1200 calories a day for about 4 days a week. Craft a plan! I welcome it. I'm going grocery shopping this friday. So far down 2 pounds. I had an annual doctor's appointment Thursday.

When you say you are burning 1200 calories, are you calculating that from straight exercise? Or are you calculating that including your resting rate of burning calories as well? 1200 calories should easily be a caloric deficit for anyone...so I am assuming you are calculating those 1200 calories of burning from your exercise alone...which is phenomenal.

If you want to stay at 1200 calories and you are following that diet strictly, you should be losing at least 2 pounds a week from now until you reach your goal without a problem. For this spread, you will want to try to get 50% protein, 20% carbs, and 30% fat. Earlier in the thread, you said you started at 230 pounds and said you have a goal weight of 170 pounds. Let's try to split this up from a macronutrient split first, and then on a later post we can pick some foods to fulfill the diet.

For 1200 calories, 50% protein means 600 calories from protein (150 grams), 20% from carbs means 240 calories from carbohydrates (60 grams), and 30% from fat means 360 calories from fat (40 grams). So, your split should be 150 grams of protein, 60 grams of carbohydrates, and 40 grams of fat. That is just a hair under 1 gram of protein per pound of goal bodyweight, .3 grams of carbs per pound of goal bodyweight, and .17 grams of fat per pound of goal bodyweight.

For now, start reading those food labels...every single one...before you put anything in your mouth. In the meantime, could you breakdown your current 1200 calories in terms of the foods you consume...we will use that diet to make any substitutions necessary to ensure you meet your weight loss goals as well as meet your macronutrient split for body re-composition.

Thanks, misu! :)

Its a new term combining "Diabetes" and "Obesity". I think this term is being popularized as a form of advocacy to prevent the influx of diabetes cases resulting from obesity. Almost 30-40% of the population now develops diabetes due to over weight problems and a lot of non government agencies strive hard to put solutions to these problem.

And I would rather keep the money in MY pocket as opposed to paying for an obese diabetic's medicine as well via medicare / taxes! Unfortunately, we are gravitating to a financially desolate socialist system and I do not have that choice. I will do what is in my control and keep myself fit and help as many other people make that choice at SHS as well.

- Fruits. Together with the above, eat plenty of it too
- Washing. Wash face with good cleanser and the moisturize
- Do not pick spots
- Blood circulation. Splash your face with hot water and then cold and then hot. Do this at least 5 to 10 times daily. It improves the circulation of blood on your face.
- Cold water. You can dip your face in cold water in 10 seconds so that your pores will be closed.
- Fatty foods is bad for your skin, don't eat too much.
- And lastly, smile and always be confident.

I totally would agree with everything you have mentioned to keep your skin looking vibrant. Especially the part about water and veggies. I have experienced a vegetarian and now vegan/raw lifestyle and my skin is looking really wonderful! I find that smoothies or vegetables and fruit mixed into a milkshake work the best. I have a habit now of drinking one green smoothie every morning. The skin loves it! :) And yes smiling is key!

I don't doubt that these foods benefit your skin in some way, but does anyone know the science behind this? It makes total sense that the vitamins from vegetables would help I suppose. I'm more curious about the protein-rich foods though, how do these help your skin...?

Again there is no substitute for the Real Deal. Water is vital and nothing quenches the thirst or rehydrates the body better than Water. I found that by putting a filtration system in our home that our water tastes more refreshing and I tend to fill up bottles of water and refrigerate them so that I can drink my water cold. Yes, at first it may take some getting used to but the taste of water actually grows on you as you reduce your intake of other beverages.

Otherwise, I'll put them in salads or rice, or as guacamole, or chopped up and as a side dish for things that are complemented well with something creamy. So good.

We like to eat ours the same way, right out of the shell with salt. I cut mine in half, scoop out the pit, and eat it with a spoon! My husband likes to peel the entire avacado and eat it whole. We also save our pits and have 7 getting ready to plant already! I can't wait for avacado trees since here avacados are a little over a dollar a piece and we go through a lot of them!

I love to dance as well. I love it so much that I'm always the first on the dance floor at weddings, against my husband's protests. I also love to blast my music while I clean and have been know to "bust a move" while scrubbing the toilet.

Dancing is what kept me fit as a teen, and I didn't even know it at the time. I would come home from school and blast my stereo so loud and just dance my little heart out all around my living room. My dad would come home from work about an hour later, yelling at me to turn down the music. It wasn't until I made the stupidest bet with him that if he would work out for 30 minutes a day for 9 months, I would quit listening to my loud music. I wanted him to lose weight, so it was worth it to me to give up my beloved dancing/music for this.

Well, my dad went on to lose 30 pounds during that 9 months and my inactivity led me to gain 20 pounds! :( Without my dancing, I spent the time vegging out in front of the boob tube and stuffing my face. But at least my dad got healthy. :)

I only dance when needed to. Physical Education in our country was mostly based on dance and not a lot of sports stuff unless you are an athlete. It's quite funny actually but I learned to like dancing thanks to that subject. I never knew i had some moves up my sleeve. But I don't really like showing off around people. I'm pretty shy on the dance floor.

Carrot juice is not only refreshing and a good source of vitamins, but also the best method to preserve carrots when you buy too much in the supermarket.

Whether inside the refrigerator, frozen or stored at room temperature, carrots tend to lose moisture, but turned into juice is a best option for me to refrigerate them.

The problem with juicing is that you tend to consume more of the product than if you just eat it as it's intended. I don't want to end up looking as if I've been Tangoed, so I'll stick with eating lightly cooked carrots with cooked meals, and raw carrots on salads and in coleslaw. Overload of vitamins can have a detrimental effect on your health, and since there are so many vitamins in carrots, it's probably easier to overdo it.

Well said. People presume eating an abundance of healthy food is the way to get healthier, but even too much of a good thing will be bad for you. It all boils(or juices)down to moderation. If you want to live longer then don't eat too much food.

Scientists experimented with something as simple as yeast. They found that when they took away most of the yeasts food source and limited it (starving it almost) it lived 30% longer. The same applies to people, the more you eat the shorter your lifespan. Sad but true.

Just look at world war veterans, etc. People who were captured and starved for years in concentration camps. Some are in their 90's now, even older.

My partner is from the Caribbean, where carrot juice is drank in volumes. I really love it myself, for my skin elasticity and of course eye health. You can drink it along with a green smoothie or on it's own. If you have a problem with the carrot tasted you can mix it with ginger and a fruit of yourchoice, like grapes.

Everybody has there own fashion sense, although getting a tattoo may be unacceptable to others, others may see it as a trending fashion that suits their personality. No opinion is wrong here and I truly respect those who loves getting a tattoo, its just that in my point of view, although it looks good to some, it also has health consequences that we have to take into account, the needles used may not be sterile. Another is, it may have been washed, it may have been cleaned but it might have been used to people with Blood borne diseases like HIV, by means of this, you also get the disease, lastly, you don't get to donate blood for the needy ot to your special someone who badly needs a blood.

Those are just the possible consequences, but again, theirs no right or wrong here, as long as you know your happy, and as long as you know you're safe, then you can go for it just like the girl who had her "Drake" Tattoo on her forehead. :)

Cthulhu, you have given me the most belly laughs I've had in a long time. I'm seriously crying from laughing at all these tattoos. The most hilarious ones are of the people who actually paid those tattoo artist dropouts to tattoo the images of their children's faces onto their skin. OMG! Some actually looked as if their kids did those masterpieces themselves.

But I must say...I love that one of the balding guy with the lawnmower man mowing his hair. It is so cute, and I'll bet he gets so many people asking him about it when he's standing in line. I couldn't help but smile if I saw that in person. Too cute!

Try and go to sleep at the same time every day. Before going to sleep take some time to write down your thoughts for 10-15 minutes. Decrease the amount of light in the house as bed time nears - no TV or cell phone usage starting at least an hour before you go to sleep.

I used to take a general Centrum multivitamin; however, I didn't notice any difference in my health. I switched to Rainbow Light prenatal mutlivitamin on the advice of, of all people, my doctor. I noticed that I actually felt rather poorly taking those -- I think that maybe there was a little too much nutrition happening with them. After that, I started taking Alive! women's formula, and I've felt a lot more energetic and a lot healthier. On top of that, I haven't noticed any weird side effects like stomach cramps or insomnia. I guess that all that you can do is try out a few different brands and see what works best for you -- though I would certainly recommend Alive!

The multi vitamin I'm taking right now is Nature's Way Alive Women 50+. It has everything I need and then some. Plus, no iron.

---End Quote---
All sugar; I wouldn't recommend a single type of trail mix...no exceptions...unless you are trying to bulk up and/or you are about to run a marathon...otherwise your body will be storing the energy...as fat...which is not healthy.

It is very important to eat a lot of fruit and vegetables on a daily basis, because they are rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, but there are some other foods that you can eat that have excellent nutritional benefits as well, such as beans, which are high in protein, fish, sweet potatoes, brown rice, flaxseed, quinoa, spelt, peanut butter (no sugar), and polenta.
---End Quote---
Fruits are loaded with sugar...less refined sugar...but sugar...which is either used immediately OR, you guessed it, stored as FAT.

When will the forum get to the bottom of the fruit "weight loss" myth? Fruit doesn't help anyone lose weight.

---Quote (Originally by cook)---
Fruits and vegetables are the main thing for weight loss but that is exception for you.So what about egg, fish, beans?because these are tasty and many ways to make them in different dishes.Try them and let me know about the result.Thank You

You need to cut out the snacks if you wnt to lose weight, just eat 3 meals. You shouldn't feel the need to snack if you are eating the right foods. Protein and vegetables will make you feel satiated for hours. Increased meal frequency raises insulin levels, not what you want to do when losing weight.

Agreed. Snacking becomes obsolete once you learn the times when food is needed and the time when food is not needed. The correct amount of protein after intermittent fasting coupled with complex carbs and fiber keeps the snacks at a thing of the past.

Here are the items you want to eat to avoid carbs in general, maximize your protein, burn fat, and lose weight:

1) whey protein shakes
2) low fat cheese
3) lean meats (burger, steak, chicken, fish)
4) fish
5) some beans (refried)
6) deli meats
7) eggs

And that is about it. If you are serious about shedding unwanted fat fast, the above foods will provide the protein without the carbohydrates, which is the true method of fat storage (if not used). You want to eliminate anything the body stores without using it, and that means saying goodbye to carbs at all times possible. Difficult to accept, but factually proven and scientifically true! :)

This is counter to what I learned about fueling my body. But then I used to be runner. The problem was that when I stopped running, I continued to eat the same way. I have increased my protein since finding the forum and I have lost weight. I can attest to it from personal experience. I still need to cut back on carbs though.

I eat most of the items on this list except eggs and I use a vegetable protein powder. I'm lactose intolerant and a bit hesitant about using a soy powder because of hormones. Also, most soy in the US is genetically modified.

I eat hummus; yes, lots of fat, but also loads of protein.
I also eat loads of vegetables, all kinds.
Drinking herbal teas is another thing I do; chai, green, and peppermint.

Nice changes to your diet, Hardison. It is hard to accept a low carbohydrate style diet before you first partake in it...especially if you are participating in endurance style types of sports...such as distance running.

The fact is, even if you are choosing to participate in high endurance types of sports, a high protein diet will provide more stamina in the long term as opposed to higher carbohydrates because the muscles will be constantly fueled to repair, rebuild, and provide fuel to work as hard as possible in short burst and long-term style types of strain...most hardcore runners would accept my statements to be a farce...but they'd be wrong. :)

Thanks for giving a better diet a chance...I hope it is helped you to lose fat and gain muscle by re-structuring your diet away from high carbs and more towards higher protein. Thanks for your feedback.

Going low carb was so hard for me at first, but once I started eating and drinking a lot more protein, the cravings went away. I was just always full and didn't even need all of those carbs. It killed my constant sugar cravings too.

You were probably experiencing low-carb flu. It can take a while for your body to adapt to the low-carbs, your body will not adapt overnight. High-protein is important for satiety on a low-carb diet, fat is important too.

I experienced the same thing. I was craving mashed potatoes and I only them a few times per year. A nutritionist tool me that potatoes were a bag of sugar. I know that potatoes are high in carbohydrates, but I never took in mind the added sugar, what is truly a shame from a craving standpoint, because I love potatoes to the extent that I have over a hundred of recipes to prepare them.

Needless to say I will start moving away from them, and look after a more healthy alternative.

Snack with nuts and carrots/ celery. Don't make the mistake of reducing your food intake or your body will go into austerity mode and your metabolism will slow down. The best foods for weight loss are lean meat and reduced carbs. Try to stay away from white foods like potatoes and sugar, especially things with high fructose corn syrup.

I guess they are going for the bulk and could care less. I would be too scared to even consider something so dangerous.

You're so right. The heart muscle is one of the most complex, efficient pumps in the world. People who make synthetic hearts have a tough time replicating it's function. It's so important for your health and when idiots pump it full of steroids, it does become larger and less efficient at pumping blood around the body, leading to numerous life threatening conditions.

Nicki Minaj, Rihanna, Beyonce and David Guetta keeps me wanting to move more whenever I exercise alone. Music I believe is a stimulator to the mind that tells your body to move/dance on its rhythm. While it is possible to work out even without music, I'd say working out is more productive with it.

It does contain nutrients we need, but it also contain lactose and the majority of the world's population are lactose intolerant, which reaffirms my point about it not being designed for humans. There are better sources of protein, fat and carbs.
---End Quote---

That argument is ridiculous and annoys me to no end when I hear it. No food is DESIGNED for humans. Creatures don't produce muscle for us to eat. Plants don't grow to feed us. We have discovered these sources of food and nutrients, same as milk. If you're against the horrendous conditions animals are kept in (which I am), I can certainly see being against drinking milk (I drink only free-range organic for this very reason). If you're against all the hormones and antibiotics given to cows that produce milk, I can certainly see that as a reason as well (I would advise buying organic - one of the FEW organic foods that is worth the money). But the "cows milk is for calves, not humans" argument is just stupid.......

And the majority of the world is NOT lactose intolerant. Some people have effects from the additives in regular milk and mistake that for lactose intolerance. Others, since they don't eat many dairy products, do not have the bacteria needed to digest them properly - but these bacteria build up after a couple of weeks and the issue disappears. Finally, many medications including things like Pepto Bismol and antibiotics kill the beneficial bacteria needed to digest dairy, causing symptoms of lactose intolerance. The actual number of truly lactose intolerant people is MUCH MUCH lower than some estimate.....

I don't think it is nonsense, the milk is tailored to the needs of the animal, this is why the milk of each animal is different.

I read that 75% of the world's population are lactose intolerant. Up to 90% in some African and Asian countries where there is no tradition of dairy farming.

Well, no other species on the planet consumes another mammals milk and most of the studies on milk reported intestinal irritation.

You are probably lactose intolerant if you suffer from bloating and diarrhea after drinking milk.

If 75% of the world is lactose intolerant, and that number correlates to the United States...and, if 40% of people start the day with a bowl of cereal and milk (which is the social norm here), does that mean that 30% of the United States goes to school and work each day with diarrhea? That would be horrendous!

At the end of the day when I am very tired and I work out I feel like sleeping. However, a great deal of workouts leave me energized and ready for more action.

I feel that taking a nap after a workout is not the best idea. Naps are healthy, as they can help you rest, but I can't sleep during the day, like many others. I definitely think that naps should be done before lunch, and well before a workout.
---End Quote---

Napping before lunch? Hopefully you have enough energy to make it to the noon hour...if not, you may want to get more sleep, stay hydrated, and get your diet and hormone levels evaluated...

I already know there is something wrong with my thyroid, but my symptoms aren't heavy. I get up at 4:30am, so I am tired by 11am (about the time I eat lunch). I am staying hydrated. I get 7-9 hours of sleep at night. My diet is fine, as I am in touch with a nutritionist.

I don't nap after workouts but I'll nap after the work day is done. Lately I've been too wired to do this though.

I'm too wired after working out to even think about taking a nap. Probably why I love to work out in the morning. It gets me revved for the day. If I worked out at night before bed, I'd be tossing and turning for hours.

You know "Nap" is a small word, but a hugely important one. And you know "Sleep" is a major requirement for good health, and sometime daytime sleep is usually needed. From daytime nap Crucial physical and mental development occurs .Naps also help keep us from becoming overtired, which not only fresh our moods but give us more energy to do more work.

---End Quote---

Exactly! For me it is all about getting the extra energy to give my all during my work outs, get my daily chores done and feel a little happier during the day, not dragging myself around. When I do all that with a good amount of energy, it is no problem for me to stick to my diet and stay away from junk. I also find that I burn more calories just because I don't want to sit around as much. So I'm working in my garden more, cleaning out a closet I've been putting off cleaning, playing with my dog more, etc... It all means more calories being burned because I'm not just sitting around watching tv, thinking about what I should be doing.

When I start another phase of my weight loss journey I am considering using a carb blocker so that I can have carbs every now and then without guilt or feeling like I'm a diet failure. I'm trying different bread alternatives available to me, and some are okay but just aren't as good. If I don't try that, then I think I would really benefit from a fat burning supplement. For some reason I can drop pounds in days but fat just doesn't want to come off. I think I just need more research on fat burning.
---End Quote---
Carb blockers are not very effective at their purported job and there are side effects. A better option would be to time your carbohydrate consumption for post-workout, taking advantage of the post-workout window.

Carb blockers are not the most effective way to lose weight...and bread? Drop it! Just get rid of all bread and most pastas from your diet, your grocery list, and your house period. Don't put those carbohydrates into your body at all and you will feel much better and will not need a carb-blocker to continue to burn fat stores.

I've taken weight loss pills on and off for over thirty years (more off than on). The best and worst was ephedra. It gave me the energy to not only get through my day but to Spring clean my whole house, re-tile the roof and build a shed in the backyard...all in one day. Okay, I kid, I kid...but it felt like I could do all that. That was the best energy I had ever had. I took it for 7 months straight, one pill a day (metabolift), and lost a ton of weight and got into the best shape of my life. Then the bottom fell out and I started to get chest pains and become dizzy. I went to see a doctor about it and told him about the ephedra and he told me to immediately get off of them because they could damage my heart. Shortly after this, I started read and hearing about how bad ephedra was in the new and in magazines and that people were dying from taking it. Very scary!

That was back in 1999, and I hadn't taken any diet pill since, just a few Monster drinks, which gave me minimal energy. Most recently, tough, I did start to take a pill from Nutrex called Lipo 6 Ultra Concentrate. It has the caffeine equivalent of 2 cups of coffee. I did some searching online and haven't found any negative reviews on it or on the other list of ingredients in it. But, of course, that's not saying that something could be found out about it later on.

But I was desperate for a little energy because, despite eating clean and living a clean lifestyle, I was dragging through my day. My sister was the one who told me about the Lipo 6, but at first I said no to them, remembering what happened with the Metabolift. But after doing some searching on the ingredients in this pill and not coming up with anything negative, I threw caution to the wind and tried one of hers.

Now, it didn't give me the same energy as Metabolift did, but I did feel a nice lift of energy overcome me within 20 minutes of taking it, which lasted me about 5-6 hours. The bottle says you can take a second pill in the afternoon, but I didn't want to chance it. The nice thing about this pill is I didn't get a headache or the extremely fatigued feeling I got the next day from not taking a metabolift pill. That impressed me.

It is also supposed to supress your appetite, but I didn't really notice any difference there. I take it more to help me get through with my workouts and get some things done around the house. And I only take it 3 times a week, too.
---End Quote---
You should post a review of Lipo 6 Ultra Concentrate in the product reviews section. Also, ephedra is one of the top 5 fat burners available and can still be purchased over the counters at pharmacies across the nation...I take it myself (50mg) every day now. Ephedra is a proven effective fat burner / weight loss pill that can enhance a healthy diet and exercise program.

Basically yes. Most energy supplements and weight loss pills (no matter what is claimed) simply provide a stimulating effect (as long as your body is not already acclimated to those stimulants) that gives you a short boost of energy...some people use that energy to work out with more intensity and focus...stimulants do not work for me and actually make me less vascular during a workout.

I think I agreed above in regards to your response as well. However, I have been continuing with my fasting for 1 hour post workout during my cutting phase to utilize the time for fat burning maximization as opposed to carb loading...better for cutting whereas carb loading immediately after workout would be more suited for bulking. Cthulhu gave me some insight into it and it has worked effectively to get me off a 30 pound weight loss plateau so far.

Derek, you are very fortunate that you don't have any problems from taking Ephedra. What about on days you don't take it, since I know you need to cycle off of them periocically? Do you crash? God, I was never so exhausted as I was coming off of the Ephedra. That was a tired I never want to know again.

Most weight loss pill are mostly "miracle" products with little or not real results tackling overweight.

My sister used to take those pills and she did it for years without having a significant reduction, and the few pounds that she lost were probably associated to diet and exercise that she was engaged with to lose those extra pounds.

Eventually she got back in shape, but not due to pills or any regime or fitness routine, but due to going to work in a mission where she rarely ate and very little due to the circumstances of the job place.

I don't skip days with the ephedra...just a week here and there periodically. No, I do not experience a crash coming off ephedra (although I used to) anymore since by the time I cycle off I am so acclimated to it. I did experience a slight crash from clenbuterol, but ephedra isn't too bad for me...my body has been exposed to so many supplements that not much affects me these days.

I'm not in a favor of using diet pills because these can be only effective if you do regular exercises with it.Without doing exercises these diet pills can only cause side effects to your body so these pills should be avoided.

Walk and running both are perfect exercises for fat burning. If someone wants to burn fat then he should do running and walking regularly. With these exercises we can burn extra fat easily.

Walking does not burn fat...it is not considered cardiovascular exercise and should not be used as a primary source of cardiovascular activity for losing weight unless you are morbidly obese.

---End Quote---

I was almost disappointed at myself for not being able to do more than 5-6 sets, but I always feel like HIIT is the most intense 15-20 minute cardio workout I've done. I've never done it on a truly empty stomach though, I imagine the aftermath of that would be some serious fatigue and lightheadedness.

Recently, I haven't been listening to anything while working unless it's straight up-data entry. When do I listen to stuff it's mostly audio books. Data entry isn't rewarding work so I like to learn things while doing it. That way I'm getting more out of working than just money.

Sometimes, I'll listen to Hip-Hop because it makes me feel pumped to push my body to the limit.

I don't know - it just as that effect on me! I mean I'm sure if I listened to Classical, I might end up asleep on the gym floor. One time, I did try to listen to Taylor Swift, but I felt weaker and less motivated to work out. Must be the musical "emotion" effect.

You need to be ingesting 4-6 really small dishes per day that include 'fat burning' food if you want to really shed ponder. Eating only one meal per day would actually slow down your metabolism and this will cause you to gain weight in the long term. You can learn more about the thermic effect of eating small frequent portions of 'fat burning' foods.

No! Not true! Too much insulin stimulation equals lower insulin response! Sorry, I used to think that too...not true! Do some investigation on Lean Gains and intermittent fasting...you won't believe it at first...but it is the most effective way to burn fat.
