Hong Kong activists, police clash outside govt HQ - MiamiHerald.com

Pro-democracy protesters clashed with police as they tried to surround Hong Kong government headquarters late Sunday, stepping up their movement for genuine democratic reforms after camping out on the city's streets for more than two months.

Repeating scenes that have become familiar since the movement began in late September, protesters carrying umbrellas — which have become symbols of the pro-democracy movement — battled police armed with pepper spray, batons and riot shields.

After student leaders told a big crowd rallying at the main protest site outside government headquarters that they would escalate their campaign, hundreds of protesters charged past police lines on the other side of the complex from the protest site. They blocked traffic on a main road, but were stopped by police barricades from going down a side road to Chief Executive Leung Chun-Ying's office.

Protesters said they wanted to occupy the road until at least the next morning to prevent Leung and other government officials from getting to work, but police in the early hours of Monday charged the crowd, aggressively pushing demonstrators back with pepper spray and batons.

Police arrested at least five protesters, according to the Hong Kong Federation of Students, one of the groups that have played important roles in organizing the protest movement, which is seeking free elections in the former British colony.

Many in the crowd were wearing surgical masks, hard hats and safety goggles. They shouted "I want true democracy."

Protesters said they were taking action to force a response from Hong Kong's government, which has made little effort to address their demands that it scrap a plan by China's Communist leaders to use a panel of Beijing-friendly elites to screen candidates for Hong Kong's leader in inaugural 2017 elections.

"We want to upgrade our action to force the government to make some statements about our goal" of genuine democracy, said protester Ernie Kwok, 21, a maintenance worker and part-time student. "I really want to have real elections for Hong Kong because I don't want the Chinese government to control us, our minds, anything."

Earlier Sunday, police warned that they would take action to prevent the protesters from surrounding government headquarters. They said in a statement that they would "take resolute enforcement actions" and would "use minimum level of force to stop any violent and illegal acts, so as to uphold the law and order."

Authorities last week used an aggressive operation to clear out the protest camp on the busy streets of Hong Kong's crowded Mong Kok district, one of three protest zones around the semiautonomous city.

In Britain, a lawmakers' committee said the Chinese Embassy had warned that its members would be refused entry if they tried to go ahead with a visit to Hong Kong as part of an inquiry into the city's relations with the U.K. since the handover of sovereignty to China in 1997.

Richard Ottaway, chairman of Parliament's committee on foreign affairs, said the Chinese authorities were acting in an "overtly confrontational manner." He said he would seek an emergency parliamentary debate on the development.

In October, I started to binge at least twice a week. I think it is because I have been limiting myself so much and have been completely depriving myself of sweets. Doctor who died of Ebola remembered at funeral as national hero in Sierra Leone - Minneapolis Star Tribune

LANDOVER HILLS, Md. — Dr. Martin Salia didn't get into the medical profession to get rich, and even though he was a permanent U.S. resident, he chose to work in his native Sierra Leone because the need for surgeons there was so great.

Although his medical colleagues were worried when he returned there to treat Ebola patients, they said the decision was consistent with his character.

The 44-year-old surgeon was remembered Saturday at his funeral Mass as a tireless, selfless and heroic advocate for medical care for the less fortunate. Salia died of Ebola on Nov. 17 after being flown to a hospital in Omaha, Nebraska, in the advanced stages of the deadly virus. He became the second person to die in the United States after contracting Ebola in West Africa, where it has killed nearly 7,000 people.

Ron Klain, the White House Ebola response coordinator, read a personal note of condolence from President Barack Obama to Salia's family.

"The greatest heroes are people who choose to face danger, who voluntarily put themselves at risk to help others," Klain said. "Martin Salia was such a man."

The 90-minute Mass at the home parish of Salia's family in Maryland drew a crowd that swelled to the hundreds. Relatives, friends, colleagues and dignitaries from both the U.S. and Sierra Leone were in attendance, along with Sierra Leonean immigrants from around the country, some of whom said they didn't know Salia personally.

Salia's wife, Isatu Salia, wept as she carried a small black box containing her husband's cremated remains into the church, flanked by the couple's sons, 20-year-old Maada and 14-year-old Hinwaii.

Bockari Stevens, the Sierra Leonean ambassador to the United States, called Salia a national hero who abandoned "the luxuries of the United States" to aid his homeland.

"It is a loss not only to your family. It is a loss to our country," Stevens said.

Stevens called for the United States to do more to "ensure that this scourge is blighted" in Sierra Leone, which is now bearing the brunt of the 8-month-old outbreak, and the other West African nations stricken by Ebola. Klain pledged that more aid was on the way.

"The world's response has been too late, but now, help is coming," he said to applause.

The top United Nations official in the fight against the disease said Saturday in an interview with The Associated Press that Sierra Leone will soon see a dramatic increase in Ebola treatment beds, but it's not clear who will staff them. Only about a quarter of a promised 1,200 treatment beds are up and running. The nation is also dogged by unsafe burials, which may account for up to 50 percent of all new cases, said Anthony Banbury, head of the U.N. Mission for Ebola Emergency Response.

Salia was born and raised in Kenema, Sierra Leone, and received his medical training in Freetown, the country's capital. He later served as a surgical resident in Cameroon and also worked in Kenya and the United States. His dream had been to open his own hospital in Sierra Leone, colleagues said.

Salia did not receive aggressive treatment for Ebola until nearly two weeks after he first started showing symptoms. His formal diagnosis was delayed, and it took several days for him to be flown back to the United States. Those delays, doctors said, probably made it impossible for anyone to save his life.

Dr. Marilee Cole, an international health consultant who ran a Georgetown University training program in Cameroon, remembered Salia as an unusually humble physician. The diminutive, wiry surgeon was always in motion, she said, and despite his work ethic, he managed to organize a soccer league for the hospital staff. After he completed his residency and began training other doctors, they were awed by his multitude of skills, she said.

"You never knew how hard he was working until you talked to your colleagues," Cole said. "Over the course of many years, I came to understand there was something special about him."

In a brief interview after the Mass, Salia's older son said he was heartened by the esteem in which others held his father.

"I'm really proud that he was able to do so many things for a lot of people," Maada Salia said.

Query: I’ve truly dangerous abdomen issues. What will have to I consume and drink? What will have to I do to get higher? Can someone assist me?

I’ve in reality unhealthy abdomen issues. What will have to I consume and drink? What must I do to get higher? Can any individual assist me?

Hi there! I’m 17 years outdated and feminine. I’ve been having abdomen issues for three months now. I started my senior year very healthy. Last year I was homeschooled and wasn’t sick once, this year I decided to go back to public school. A couple weeks into school a virus went around the district and I caught it. It started off as just a cough and cold. Then, after that went away, I started to get nauseous and have stomach pains and cramps. The nausea and pain usually starts in late afternoon and continues through the night, until when I go to bed. It has gotten worse and worse. It has gotten to the point where I am unable to eat at night. I have gone to so many doctors, including a digestive disease expert and had an Higher GI collection carried out and one thing with my intestines and stools and so they got here again bad. The digestive physician retains considering I am deliberately no longer consuming, like I am anorexic, which is a long way from actual. Belief me, I want I might devour, I used to consume the whole thing. For the reason that I’ve been unable to devour I’ve misplaced 20 kilos or extra, which isn’t just right. I even have been having constipation, however that ultimate two nights I had diarrhea. I’ve tried the whole thing. I’m not for taking prescription medicine, and I’m fearful of hospitals, so I am staying to avoid that. I’ve tried gluten-free toast, saltines, white rice, brown rice, Cellfood, Tums, Pepto-Bismol, Fuel-X, a pair prescription medicines that made me a lot worse, hen broth, and now oatmeal and a variety of ginger.

No safety concerns raised in Ebola vaccine trial, researchers say - Salina.com

Initial human testing of a top Ebola vaccine candidate demonstrated that the drug was safe and provoked a strong immune response, according to researchers.

In a paper published in The New England Journal of Medicine, researchers at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases described the effects of the so-called NIAID/GSK investigational Ebola vaccine on 20 adults at the NIAID’s Vaccine Research Center.

“In this small study, no safety concerns were identified; however, transient fever developed within one day after vaccination in two participants,” wrote study co-author Nancy Sullivan, chief of the VRC’s biodefense research section, and colleagues.

The vaccine, which uses a weakened and genetically modified chimpanzee cold virus, is one of several that now are under accelerated development in response to the Ebola epidemic in West Africa. To date, the outbreak has killed more than 5,600 people, and sickened more than 15,900, according to the World Health Organization.

The trial participants—nine men and 11 women—were split into two groups, with one group receiving a stronger dose of vaccine. Researchers said that the stronger dosage provoked a larger immune system response, but also caused the temporary fever in two subjects.

The same vaccine was shown to be effective in monkeys, but the exact dosage that would be appropriate for humans remains unclear. In animal tests, the monkeys were given the vaccine and then infected with large amounts of the Ebola virus—something that would be unethical to do with human subjects. Researchers say that cases of human infection probably involve smaller quantities of the virus.

“Although the results of the trial are indeed promising, questions remain,” wrote Dr. Daniel Bausch, an epidemiologist at Tulane University.

“There were no major adverse effects, but the sample size (10 persons at each dose level) is too small to draw firm conclusions in this regard ... Getting the dose right has relevance not only for ensuring individual protection and minimizing adverse effects, but also for stretching the vaccine supply to the maximum number of doses possible to combat the ongoing outbreak,” Bausch wrote.

The NIAID/GSK vaccine was formulated to fight two strains of Ebola: Zaire and Sudan. The current outbreak involves the Zaire strain of the virus.

A different version of the vaccine, which would focus only on the Zaire strain, began human testing in October, according to the NIAID. Results of those studies should be available by the end of the year.

COLUMBUS – State officials say more than 400,000 hunters expect to take to the field during the upcoming deer-gun season in Ohio.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources says hunters checked more than 75,000 deer during last year's season and checked almost 87,000 deer in 2012. Hunting hours for all deer seasons are 30 minutes before sunrise to 30 minutes after sunset.

The weeklong hunt begins Monday and runs through Dec. 7. The state says specific straight-walled cartridge rifles are now legal for use, which is new this year.

The statewide bag limit is nine deer from all counties combined. But a hunter cannot exceed an individual county's bag limit.

Hunters must have a valid deer permit and a valid Ohio hunting license.

Ohio State's football team ready to play against That Team Up North - Maine News

Gov. John Kasich and Lt. Gov. Mary Taylor declared Saturday, November 29, 2014 'Scarlet Letter Saturday'. Ohioans are asked to 'avoid using the letter 'M' when possible' in the proclamation. Saturday has been made a day for the scarlet and gray of Ohio State University. The resolution was signed by Kasich on Friday.

Ohio State's football team is all prepared to play against University of Michigan at Ohio Stadium in Columbus Saturday. All members of the college football playoff selection committee have been made honorary Ohioans in the resolution. The list has names of Condoleezza Rice and Archie Manning.

The resolution has been issued in honor of the forthcoming football game between Ohio State University and That Team Up North. The match is scheduled to be played on November 29.

"It is such a big game and it is good to get the whole state involved. Anything we can do to add more fun to the rivalry is good," current OSU drum major and former Portsmouth resident David Pettit said.

Local OSU supporter William McKinley is very active in his alma mater. McKinley has a scholarship established in his alma mater and there is a library in the stadium, which is named after him.

McKinley said that event has been organized to just prove that one is a pure Buckeye and not spiritless and he thinks that he need not prove is loyalty by avoiding the letter m. McKinley is not happy with Michigan being down.

He remembered his love for his team, when he used to listen to the football games with his family on the radio. Presently, The Team From the North is 5-6 and Ohio State University is 10-1.

McIlroy still upbeat despite mid-round collapse in Sydney

(Reuters) - Rory McIlroy suffered a spectacular two-hole meltdown in the third round of the Australian Open on Saturday but he was not quite ready to give up on his title defence after windy conditions kept his rivals in check.

The world number one plummeted down the leaderboard when he dropped a combined five shots at the ninth and 10th holes but even a five-over-par 76 left him just six shots off the pace going into Sunday's final round.

"I need a fast start tomorrow to have a chance," he told reporters. "It depends too on what the guys ahead of me do. I need some help. But the greens have been firmer every day. So a low score is higher than it was.

"I still feel like I can shoot a good one. I just don't know if that will be enough. I'll be trying my best. It's the last round of the season so it would be nice to make it a good one."

McIlroy had stayed among the leaders for his first eight holes, sinking a couple of clutch par putts and rebounding from a bogey at the fourth with a birdie at the next which could have been an eagle had he not lipped out with the putt.

His driving had been erratic, though, and he paid the full price for it at the ninth.

He launched his tee shot into a reedy thicket and his first attempt to extricate the ball left it wedged under some matting, forcing him to take a drop with a two-putt on the green leading to a triple bogey.

At the 10th, he found the woods from the tee, again failed to get back on the fairway with his first effort and coming up short with a 10 foot putt for bogey.

"It was a tough day obviously," he said. "The wind was up. I was doing okay, steady enough, until I got to the ninth. I hit a wayward tee shot into what I thought was a decent enough lie that I could advance the ball.

"But I didn't realise what I was standing on is not like dirt or earth. It was more like carpet. So the ball went underneath the carpet. Had it been a normal surface it would have been alright, but down there it was impossible."

Egypt: Ex-ruler Hosni Mubarak, accused in deaths of hundreds, cleared of charges - CNN

<div style="padding-bottom: 17px;padding-top:17px;">

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

  • Mubarak tells Egyptian TV station: "I didn't commit anything"

  • The 86-year-old is still serving a three-year sentence for embezzlement

  • Mubarak was convicted in 2012 for the deaths of protesters, but was given a new trial

  • The former president ruled Egypt for almost 30 years before resigning amid protests

Cairo (CNN) -- Egypt's former longtime ruler Hosni Mubarak was cleared of charges in a retrial Saturday and could soon be released -- a stunning reversal for a man who faced life imprisonment or worse after a revolution toppled him in 2011.

A Cairo judge dismissed charges linking Mubarak to the deaths of hundreds of protesters during the 2011 revolt -- overturning the former strongman's convictions in 2012 -- and found him not guilty of corruption.

Mubarak, who ruled Egypt as president for 29 years, was stoic as his supporters in the courtroom cheered the decision that capped a monthslong retrial. The 86-year-old, reclining on a hospital gurney in a defendants' cage, nodded while fellow defendants kissed him on the head.

Later, he told the country's Sada ElBalad TV station in a brief phone interview that he "didn't commit anything."

"I laughed when I heard the first verdict," he said of the first trial. "When it came to the second verdict, I said I was waiting. It would go either way. It wouldn't have made a difference to me either way."

Mubarak had been convicted of issuing orders to kill peaceful protesters during the country's 2011 uprising and was sentenced to life in prison. He appealed and was granted a new trial last year.

Also acquitted Saturday were Mubarak's former Interior Minister Habib el-Adly and six of el-Adly's aides, who'd been accused of being connected to the deaths of 239 protesters as security forces cracked down on them in 2011. Mubarak's two sons also were acquitted Saturday of corruption.

Mubarak still has a three-year sentence for a previous conviction for embezzlement, but it wasn't immediately clear how much time he's already been credited with, and therefore when he will be free.

CNN's efforts to reach Mubarak's lawyer Farid El-Deeb for comment weren't immediately successful.

Prosecutors have the option of appealing Saturday's decision.

Both sides have alleged that Mubarak's trials have been politicized, with supporters arguing he was unfairly vilified and opponents fearing that he'd be acquitted as memories of the revolution faded.

His legal fortunes did seem to parallel the political climate -- just last year, Mohamed Morsy, the Islamist who became Egypt's first democratically elected president, supported a retrial, with some arguing Mubarak should have received a death sentence rather than life in captivity.

But Morsy himself was deposed by the military in July 2013, as opponents accused him of pursuing an Islamist agenda at the exclusion of other factions.

And now the Arab Spring revolt that ousted Mubarak has come nearly full circle -- Mubarak appears close to freedom; Morsy is jailed, his Muslim Brotherhood banned; and Morsy supporters allege the current government has returned to Mubarak's authoritarian practices.

Explaining the verdict

Judge Mahmoud el-Rashidy said he dropped charges against Mubarak because Cairo Criminal Court didn't have the jurisdiction to try him for the protesters' deaths.

The judge said the case that prosecutors initially referred to the court listed only el-Adly and his aides as defendants -- not Mubarak himself.

But after mass protests pressured the prosecutor general to question Mubarak, a second referral was made to the court, and the two cases were merged into one.

Lawyer Hoda Nasralla, who represents the families of 65 slain and injured protesters, said the inclusion of Mubarak in a second referral should have trumped his exclusion in the first.

"The judge shied away from directly acquitting Mubarak even though he was accused of conspiring with Adly, and Adly was acquitted," she said. "The judge resorted to formalities instead."

'I want only God's retribution'

Salway El-Sayed, mother of one of the slain 2011 protesters, sat down on a sidewalk outside the court after she heard Saturday's verdicts, praying to God to deliver justice.

She broke down in tears, her hands shaking, as she recalled her son Tamer Hanafy, who was killed in January 2011 in Tahrir Square, epicenter of the uprising.

"I'm worried my son's blood would go in vain," she said. "Our children's blood isn't cheap. Their blood is precious, like any other blood."

"I don't want execution," she continued. "This won't bring back my son. ... I want only God's retribution. Nothing more."

How it started

In January 2011, throngs of Egyptians filled the streets of Cairo to decry the country's poverty, unemployment and repression. Protesters called for Mubarak to step down but were met by a fierce and often violent government crackdown. Mubarak eventually stepped down in 2011.

That freed up long-supressed Islamist movements, including the Muslim Brotherhood, to run for office. Morsy, backed by the Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party, became president in June 2012.

But Morsy was ousted in a coup about a year later amid widespread protests against his rule. Since then, Cairo's military-installed government has banned the Brotherhood, calling it a terrorist group -- an allegation it denies -- and accusing it of being behind a wave of deadly attacks on police and the military.

Many Islamist and secular activists have been arrested and given lengthy sentences. A restrictive protest law and repeated deadly crackdowns on demonstrations followed.

Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, the general who led Morsy's ouster, was elected president in May after leaving the military to run for the office.

Not free yet

Since Mubarak stepped down in February 2011, the ailing former ruler has appeared in court numerous times on a variety of charges, often wheeled in on a gurney. His lawyers say he suffered health problems after his 2011 arrest, including a stroke, and he has served much of his prison time at a military medical facility.

In May, a Cairo court sentenced him to three years in prison for embezzlement. His sons Gamal and Alaa were sentenced to four years each on the same charge.

All three were convicted of embezzling $18 million that was allocated for the renovation of presidential palaces. The Mubaraks have insisted they are not guilty.

Journalist Sarah Sirgany reported from Cairo; CNN's Jason Hanna and Holly Yan reported and wrote from Atlanta. CNN's Ian Lee and Yousuf Basil contributed to this report.

Black Friday: retailers say it's the busiest day on record - Telegraph.co.uk

By

Laura Donnelly

Follow

Retailers say they have celebrated their busiest day ever after Black Friday “surpassed all expectations”.

Online store Amazon recorded orders for more than 5.5 million goods, while London’s Oxford Street said sales for the three-day weekend are expected to be up to 15 per cent up on the same period last year.

It followed scenes of chaos in many parts of the country.

Police were called to supermarkets across the UK as shoppers fought for discounted products, while the websites for Tesco, John Lewis, Currys and Argos all crashed under the weight of demand.

The chief constable of Greater Manchester Police said that he was “disappointed” about the measures taken by retailers to prepare for the influx of shoppers, while retail analysts warned that the reputation of companies could be damaged by the online failures.

Black Friday has traditionally been an American retail phenomenon that takes place on the day after Thanksgiving.

However, Amazon brought the promotional event into the UK in 2010 and this year most of Britain’s retailers offered discounts. The online retailer said that it had recorded orders for more than 5.5 million goods on Friday – with around 64 items sold per second. This surpassed the 4 million sold last black Friday, and a previous record of 4.1 million sales which was achieved on “Cyber Monday” last year – the first Monday after Thanksgiving.

Vice President of EU Retail at Amazon, Xavier Garambois, said: "Ever since we introduced Black Friday to the UK in 2010, sales have increased year on year but this year really has surpassed all of our expectations.

"The public's appetite for Black Friday has been bigger than ever, kicking off the Christmas shopping period in earnest and establishing Black Friday as a fixture on the UK Christmas shopping calendar."

Police had to step in to break up fights that erupted in the aisles of supermarkets offering huge price cuts on the annual promotions day, which has now emerged as one of Britain's busiest shopping days.

Retailers in Oxford Street reported a 20 per cent increase in visitors on Friday morning, compared with Black Friday last year.

New West End Company, which represents the shops in Oxford Street, said they were expecting sales for the three-day weekend to be between 10 and 15 per cent higher than the same period last year .

Jace Tyrrell, Deputy Chief Executive, of the company said on Saturday that stores were reporting “brisk trade” with forecasts now suggesting £150m will be spent over the three days.

He said: “We are really seeing the public embrace Black Friday – it’s becoming like Boxing Day for retailers. It used to be that this was mainly about technology products but it is far broader now, and we are seeing a lot of fashion sales.”

Mr Tyrell said on Saturday that Oxford Street was busy, but did not seem to be suffering from the outbreaks of violence in other parts of the country, as shoppers clamoured to get their hands on a bargain.

Retailers said the timing of Black Friday brought shoppers out in their hordes.

Ian Dallow of Debenhams in Oxford Street said, “The last Friday of November has always been a big shopping day, because it falls around the penultimate pay day before Christmas. Black Friday has made it even more exciting and this Friday will not disappoint, with plenty of fantastic opportunities to find the perfect Christmas gift.

Asda is among the retailers extending the offers today after more than 2 million people visited its stores yesterday, sparking chaos and violence in some branches over discounted TVs.

Huge demand saw shoppers struggling to access the websites of Tesco Direct, Currys, Argos and GAME yesterday.

One of Britain's most senior police officers criticised retailers for their handling of the crowds which threatened to cause crushes and urged retailers to work with police in further sales events.

At least three people were arrested and a woman was hurt after being hit by a falling television, while some outlets were forced to shut to restore order.

Eyewitnesses described how bargain-hunters behaved "like animals" and likened scenes to "a war zone".

Sir Peter Fahy, chief constable of Greater Manchester Police, whose force appealed to shoppers to "keep calm", said the events were "totally predictable" and that he was "disappointed stores did not have sufficient security staff on duty".

"This created situations where we had to deal with crushing, disorder and disputes between customers," he said.

"It does not help that this was in the early hours when police resources are already stretched.

"Across Greater Manchester large supermarkets already make significant demands on policing through calls to shoplifting, anti-social behaviour and thefts of fuel from their petrol stations - much of which is preventable.

"We just ask these stores to work with us to reduce the demands on policing and reduce the risks of disorder and crime."

After Metropolitan police were called to three Tesco branches in London following reports of large crowds in Edmonton, Willesden and Surrey Quays, Sergeant Paul Marshall said on Twitter: "Even on Black Friday shoving people to the floor so you can get £20 off a coffee maker is still an assault."

15 arrested at demonstration in Ferguson - Businessweek

FERGUSON, Mo. (AP) — In a Nov. 29 story and accompanying news guide about protests over the grand jury decision in the Michael Brown case, The Associated Press misidentified the Ferguson street where a Friday night protest happened. It happened on South Florissant Road, not West Florissant Avenue, which is also a street in Ferguson.

15 arrested as protests return to Ferguson police department after mall shut-downs

By PHILLIP LUCAS and TOM FOREMAN Jr.

Associated Press

FERGUSON, Mo. (AP) — Demonstrators temporarily shut down three large malls in suburban St. Louis on one of the busiest shopping days of the year and then marched in front of the Ferguson police department to protest a grand jury's recent decision not to indict the police officer who fatally shot 18-year-old Michael Brown.

Several stores lowered their security doors or locked entrances as at least 200 protesters sprawled onto the floor while chanting, "Stop shopping and join the movement," at the Galleria mall in Richmond Heights a few miles south of Ferguson, Missouri, where Officer Darren Wilson fatally shot Brown, who was unarmed, in August.

The action prompted authorities to close the mall for about an hour Friday afternoon, while a similar protest of about 50 people had the same effect at West County Mall in nearby Des Peres. And several dozen demonstrators led to a temporary closure of the Chesterfield Mall.

Later Friday night, a group of about 100 protesters marched down South Florissant Road in front of the city's police and fire departments chanting, blocking traffic and stopping in front of some businesses.

"I served my country. I spent four years in the Army, and I feel like that's not what I served my country for," said Ebonie Tyse, 26, of St. Louis. "I served my country for justice for everyone. Not because of what color, what age, what gender or anything," she said.

Fifteen people were arrested, according to Missouri Department of Public Safety spokesman Mike O'Connell. He said charges would include peace disturbance and impeding the flow of traffic, and two people would be charged with resisting arrest and one with assault.

Monday night's announcement that Wilson, who is white, wouldn't be indicted for fatally shooting Brown, who was black, prompted violent protests that resulted in about a dozen buildings and some cars being burned. Dozens of people were arrested.

The rallies have been ongoing but have grown more peaceful this week, as protesters turn their attention to disrupting commerce. Elsewhere on Friday, protests in Chicago, New York, Seattle and northern California — where protesters chained themselves to trains — were among the largest in the country on Black Friday.

In Oakland, more than a dozen people were arrested after about 125 protesters wearing T-shirts that read "Black Lives Matter" interrupted train service from Oakland to San Francisco, with some chaining themselves to trains. Dozens of people in Seattle blocked streets, and police said some protesters also apparently chained doors shut at the nearby Pacific Place shopping center.

In Chicago, about 200 people gathered near the city's popular Magnificent Mile shopping district, where Kristiana Colon, 28, called Friday "a day of awareness and engagement." She's a member of the Let Us Breathe Collective, which has been taking supplies such as gas masks to protesters in Ferguson.

"We want them to think twice before spending that dollar today," she said of shoppers. "As long as black lives are put second to materialism, there will be no peace."

Malcolm London, a leader in the Black Youth Project 100, which has been organizing Chicago protests, said the group was also trying to rally support for other issues, such as more transparency from Chicago police.

"We are not indicting a man. We are indicting a system," London told the crowd.

Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon on Friday announced that he will call a special session of the General Assembly to provide funding for public safety efforts related to protests. A news release from his office said that due to the increased presence of the State Highway Patrol and the Missouri National Guard in the region, the state's financial obligations for emergency duties are on track to exceed what had been appropriated.

Two killed in Taliban raid in Kabul, Camp Bastion under fire - Reuters

(Reuters) - Afghan security forces overcame Taliban insurgents attacking a guest house for international aid workers in Afghanistan's capital on Saturday and were still fighting gunmen inside former U.S. and British base Camp Bastion.

Foreign troops left the camp in the south of Afghanistan just a few weeks ago.

Taliban attacks are intensifying as the U.S.-led coalition prepares to withdraw most of its soldiers by the end of 2014.

At least two civilians were killed in the second attack in three days on expatriate aid workers' housing in Kabul. One Taliban fighter was killed when his suicide vest exploded and the other two attackers were shot, Qadam Shah Shaheem, commander of the Afghan army's 111 Military Corps Kabul, said.

Eight people, including two foreigners, were rescued from the building in Kabul's western Karte Seh district during the four-hour gunbattle.

Two bodies were found on the lower floors, but their identities were not known, Shaheem said.

Kabul police spokesman Hashmat Stanekzai said in a statement that one was Afghan and one was a foreigner, but he did not give the nationality.

The Taliban insurgents claimed responsibility, with a spokesman saying in a statement that their fighters had targeted a Christian organization seeking to convert Muslims. Authorities did not know the name of the aid organization.

On Thursday, Taliban gunmen had stormed a guest house in Kabul's diplomatic quarter. Only the attackers were killed.

In southern Afghanistan, soldiers were still fighting Taliban gunmen inside Camp Bastion, a major southern base handed over to Afghans by the British and U.S. militaries in October.

A few dozen Taliban fighters with automatic weapons and suicide vests had attacked the base in Helmand province on Thursday, General Ayatullah Khan, commander of the army regiment in the area, said.

"Some managed to get inside, took position, and started the gunfight," he said, noting that the insurgents appeared to be holed up in one of the smaller camps within Camp Bastion.

At least five soldiers and 26 insurgents were killed on Friday at the base, Omar Zwak, a spokesman for Helmand's governor, said.

The Taliban, who were ousted from power by the U.S.-led coalition in 2001, claimed that hundreds had been killed in the attack. The insurgents routinely inflate casualty figures.
